The Austrian parliament has decided that authorities may issue certain rulings without human review and also with the help of AI. Preconditions include documented trials, ongoing spot checks, traceable training data and a system that does not keep learning on its own during operation. Those affected can object within two weeks, after which a person decides.
Companies also make automated decisions with consequences for third parties, for example on credit limits, warranty claims or the pre-selection of job applications. In such cases, Swiss data protection law requires that those affected are informed and, on request, that a human reviews the decision.
We consider the Austrian conditions a useful template: define suitability for each process, test before going live, check with spot samples and offer a simple way to reach a responsible person.
